Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Analysis
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is a numerical indication of the grade level required to read and understand a given sample of text. This script will grab your journal's latest entries, perform the Flesch-Kincaid analysis on them, and tell you the reading level of your selection, as well as some handy statistics. To begin, input your LiveJournal username and click Analyze.

What exactly is this Flesch-Kincaid formula?
It's a formula developed a quarter-century ago by a Navy researcher to quickly and simply calculate the educational grade level of comprehension needed to understand a given passage of text. It has numerous flaws and is only supposed to be used as a rough guide, not a concrete indicator. You can read more about the formula here.
Hey! This says my journal is grade level 4! I'm not in 4th grade!
The grade level given by the formula does not indicate the education level of the writer. It indicates at what grade level the reader's comprehension must be at for them to understand the text. So if your journal has a low grade level, it means you have written it in a very clear and easy-to-understand manner.
All of my posts are friends-locked.
If your posts are friends-locked or protected, this script does not have access to them and cannot perform the analysis. Sorry!
It says "No text found to analyze." I have lots of text in my journal!
This message means the script was unable to fetch your journal entries for some reason. This may happen if the LiveJournal servers are unreachable temporarily. Try refreshing the script in a few minutes and see if it works. If you still can't get it to work, please email me and tell me your screen name so I can look into it.
Every time I refresh this, it says the same thing!
None of this script's output is randomised, so refreshing it won't change anything. To make it change, you'll have to go update your journal and then re-run the script.
I have no entries in my journal, but it still says it found some text!
Unfortuantely, the text-gathering algorithm isn't perfect, and it will always get some words that aren't actually part of your entries. Sorry!
This is fun! Have you made any other toys?
Why, yes, I have. You can check them out at my toys page. Enjoy!
